Your Claude or ChatGPT plan is separate from Sheets Resume. The setup steps below say which of their plans support connectors.
Setup
Connect Claude
Works on every Claude plan, including Free. Free Claude accounts can add one custom connector, so if you already have one, remove it first. On Team and Enterprise plans, an owner adds the connector under Organization settings, Connectors (Add, then Custom, then Web), and then each person connects their own account from Customize, Connectors.
Set it up on the web or in the desktop app. Once it's connected, it also works in the Claude mobile apps.
- 1In Claude (on the web at claude.ai or in the desktop app), open Customize, then Connectors. Older versions of Claude call this Settings then Connectors.
- 2Click the + button and choose Add custom connector.
- 3Name it Sheets Resume and paste the connector URL below. Leave Advanced settings empty, then click Add.

- 5In any chat, click the + button in the lower left, open Connectors and make sure Sheets Resume is switched on. Then ask away.
Setup
Connect ChatGPT
ChatGPT adds custom connectors through developer mode, which needs a paid ChatGPT plan (Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise or Edu) and works on chatgpt.com in a web browser, not in the mobile apps. On Business, Enterprise and Edu workspaces, an admin may need to allow developer mode first.
Heads up: OpenAI says full support for actions that save or change things is rolling out to Business, Enterprise and Edu first. On personal Plus and Pro accounts, ChatGPT may be limited to reading, so it can read your resumes and write a tailored version in the chat, but may not be able to save it back to Sheets Resume yet. If you want everything today, Claude is the easier route.
- 1On chatgpt.com, open Settings, then Security and login, and turn on Developer mode. On some accounts the switch is under Settings, Apps, Advanced settings.
- 2Go to Plugins (older versions call it Apps) and click the + button to create a new app.
- 3Name it Sheets Resume, add a short description like “My resumes”, and paste the connector URL below. If it asks how to sign in, choose OAuth.

- 5Start a new chat, open the + menu, choose Developer mode and pick Sheets Resume. ChatGPT asks you to confirm before it saves or changes anything.
OpenAI has moved these menus around a lot this year. If a name above doesn't match what you see, look for Developer mode in Settings, then add the connector wherever ChatGPT lists your apps or plugins.

The Sheets Resume tailoring guide
The standard Sheets Resume uses when it tailors a resume to a job posting; its in-app tailor works to the same rules. A tailored copy that meets it reads as if the candidate had always written the resume for this kind of role: natural, confident, specific and truthful.

Every edit has a reason
A bullet is rewritten only when it describes something the job posting actually asks for. A bullet with no clear connection to the posting, or one whose connection takes explaining, stays exactly as the candidate wrote it, word for word. There is no target amount of change at any intensity: a copy where only 2 or 3 bullets changed, each for a clear reason, meets the standard, and one where 15 bullets changed but half have no real connection to the job falls short. Making a bullet read a little better is not, on its own, a reason to change it.
Reframed, not stapled
A tailored bullet describes the candidate's real accomplishment in the vocabulary, priorities and success metrics this employer cares about, and its relevance is self-evident. Bolting the posting's keywords, industry, product or company name onto an existing bullet, or explaining why a bullet is relevant, is known as stapling: it reads as robotic, and recruiters spot it at once. Keeping a bullet's wording and appending a phrase from the posting after a comma counts as stapling too. The posting decides what gets emphasized; its text never appears in the resume.
Truthful
Reframing real work is in scope; inventing it is not. A tailored copy adds no skill, tool or experience the candidate lacks. It matches the job's language, not its literal words: a candidate who "worked with clients and executives" can be described as having "managed stakeholder relationships across clients and executives", because that is true.
Concrete details survive
Every number, metric, quantity, named program, tool and credential in an original bullet is still there after the rewrite. When a bullet has several numbers, all of them stay: "Supported 14 graduate students in a course of 99 total students" keeps both the 14 and the 99. Specific accomplishments (scope, scale, metrics, outcomes) count for more than keyword lists.
Natural wording
Bullets never name the target job title, company or product, and never use phrases such as "which is like", "similar to", "aligning with", "as mentioned in the job description" or "relevant to this role". The copy is in the same language as the original resume and contains no em dashes (commas, semicolons, colons or a rewritten sentence take their place; hyphens in compound words are fine).
Section by section
Work experience
- Every job from the original resume is in the tailored copy, however many there are and however old.
- Each job keeps the same number of bullets it started with: none deleted, none merged. A bullet unrelated to the job stays as its own bullet, unchanged or close to its original wording.
- Bullets that relate to the posting are rewritten in its vocabulary, leading with the outcome. A candidate who really deployed services on AWS, applying for a cloud infrastructure role, gets that bullet reframed around the AWS work and its impact; AWS is never added for a candidate who never used it.
- Job titles can be adjusted within reason, never invented: Product Manager can become Technical Product Manager when the posting emphasizes technical acumen.
- Bullets can be reordered so the most relevant come first, more so at higher intensities.
Verb tense
- Bullets are in first-person implied voice: no "I", written as the candidate describing their own work.
- Current positions (dates ending in "Present") use present tense: "Oversee brand positioning", "Lead product development", not "Oversees" or "Leads".
- Past positions use past tense: "Led product development", "Oversaw brand positioning".
Skills
- Skills are reordered so the ones most relevant to the posting come first.
- An inferred skill or technology is added only when the resume makes it clear the candidate genuinely has it. When in doubt, it is left out.
Never changed
- Interests are never reordered, edited, added to or removed from, at any intensity.
- Contact details, dates, company names and schools stay as they are.
Intensity levels
Subtle
Light touch: only the obvious matches change.
- The tightest relevance bar: a bullet is rewritten only when it has an obvious, direct connection to something the posting explicitly asks for. A bullet whose connection is unclear or would need explaining stays as it is.
- Rewrites are light, natural language shifts that keep the candidate's original phrasing and structure as much as possible.
- Most of the resume normally stays completely untouched.
Medium (default)
Every bullet with a genuine connection to the posting is reframed.
- A moderate relevance bar: a bullet is rewritten when it has a genuine connection to something the posting asks for, even when that connection is not the most obvious one. A bullet that relates to no specific requirement or responsibility in the posting stays untouched.
- Rewritten bullets can be reframed more fully than at subtle, always in the candidate's own voice.
- Relevant real skills are surfaced and the emphasis shifts toward the job's requirements, without stapling.
- Each bullet is judged on whether it has a real reason to change, not on how much of the resume ends up looking different.
Aggressive
The widest net, still truthful.
- The widest relevance bar: a bullet is rewritten when it has any plausible, genuine connection to the posting's requirements, responsibilities or general domain. A bullet with no real connection to the job still stays as it is.
- Qualifying bullets are rewritten rather than preserved, more fully, leading harder with outcomes and metrics, and still truthful and natural (no stapling here either).
- Sections and bullets are reordered for impact, sections that align with the posting can be added or expanded using only real experience, and job titles can be adjusted within reason.
- Technologies are reordered by relevance. Tools, frameworks or platforms the posting names that fit the candidate's background can be added, and technologies that are not relevant to the role move down or come off.
- Certifications, projects and volunteer experiences are reordered so the most relevant come first. Project and volunteer descriptions can emphasize the technologies, transferable skills, metrics and outcomes the posting mentions.
- A result where only a third of the bullets relate to the job, and only those are rewritten, is still correct at this intensity.
Examples
Figures in the tailored examples stand for the candidate's real numbers. Truthfulness rules out invented ones.
The posting asks for: Nothing about representing the company publicly, trade shows or account renewals.
Original: “Represented the company at industry trade shows and account renewal events.”
Weak: “Represented the company at high-profile trade shows and events, enhancing brand visibility.” Edited with no reason: it invents an outcome (brand visibility) the posting never asked for.
Tailored: “Represented the company at industry trade shows and account renewal events.” Left exactly as written, because nothing in the posting relates to it. Leaving a bullet alone is a deliberate, correct result.
The posting asks for: Own our payment infrastructure and transaction reliability at scale.
Weak: “Built internal payment APIs, which is essentially blockchain-based payment rails when you think about it.” Keyword stapling.
Tailored: “Architected high-throughput transaction processing APIs handling $2M in daily payment volume.” The real work, reframed around what the posting cares about.
The posting asks for: Experience leading engineering teams through complex platform migrations.
Weak: “Managed a team of 5 engineers, similar to the fintech environment described in the job posting.” Echoes the posting instead of describing the work.
Tailored: “Led a 5-engineer team through a payments-platform migration, cutting settlement time 40%.” Relevant on its face, with the team size kept.
The posting asks for: Deliver exceptional, high-volume customer support.
Weak: “Handled customer support tickets, aligning with your need for a Customer Success Specialist.” Explains the relevance and names the target role.
Tailored: “Resolved 40+ customer issues daily while maintaining a 95% satisfaction score.” Shows volume and quality instead of claiming a match.
The posting asks for: Foster a creative environment that encourages artistic expression.
Weak: “Managed a beginning orchestra program serving 76 students, fostering a creative environment for artistic expression.” Appended, not integrated: the original bullet with the posting's own phrase glued on after a comma.
Tailored: “Directed a 76-student beginning orchestra program built around creativity and hands-on musical expression.” Rewritten as one natural sentence, and the 76 students survive.
The posting asks for: Consistently exceed revenue targets in a competitive B2B sales environment.
Original: “Sold software subscriptions to small businesses.”
Tailored: “Closed $850K in annual software subscription revenue, exceeding quota by 30% for three consecutive quarters.” States the real sales work with the specificity this employer measures.
The posting asks for: Streamline warehouse operations and reduce fulfillment costs.
Original: “Helped manage inventory and shipping processes.”
Tailored: “Redesigned inventory tracking and shipping workflows, cutting fulfillment costs 18% and reducing shipping errors by half.” Leads with the outcome the posting cares about.
The posting asks for: Use data to drive instructional decisions and improve student outcomes.
Original: “Taught 5th grade math and tracked student progress.”
Tailored: “Used weekly assessment data to adjust math instruction, raising average student proficiency scores 15% over the school year.” The same teaching work, framed around data-informed instruction.
How tailored copies are saved
- Tailoring works from the full job posting text and one resume (list_resumes, get_resume). A job title alone is not enough to tailor from.
- In AI apps that show interactive cards, preview_tailored_copy shows the tailored copy next to the original with Save copy and Export PDF buttons. A preview saves nothing; the card's Save copy button, or save_tailored_copy with the same arguments, saves it.
- save_tailored_copy saves the tailored copy as a new resume, titled "<original title> - <company>" by default. The original resume is never changed; editing a resume in place is what update_resume is for.
changesholds only the sections that changed, but each section sent replaces that whole section, so it carries every entry and bullet of that section in order, with untouched ones copied word for word. contactDetails merges field by field; the summary is contactDetails.summary.- Free accounts hold up to 3 resumes, tailored copies included. At the limit save_tailored_copy saves nothing and its error lists the options.
- Exports (export_resume: PDF, Word, ODT or LaTeX) need paid access. account.can_export says whether they are available, and account.plans_url describes the plans.

Questions, answered.
What can the AI see in my account?
Only your resumes: their titles, their content and their saved versions, plus the email on your account and whether your plan includes exports. It can't see your password, billing details, cover letters or anything else, and it can't delete resumes.
Is my data private?
You sign in on sheetsresume.com, so your password is never shared with Claude or ChatGPT. When your assistant reads a resume, that resume goes to the AI company you connected (Anthropic for Claude, OpenAI for ChatGPT) and is handled under their privacy terms and your settings there. On our side nothing changes: your resumes stay in your account under our Privacy Policy. We keep a simple log of the actions your assistant takes, like saving a copy, so we can fix problems.

Connecting is free, and so are reading, tailoring, saving copies and editing. Exporting files needs a paid Sheets Resume plan, same as in the builder. The AI writing happens in your own assistant, so it runs on your Claude or ChatGPT plan, not ours.

Will it change my original resume?
Not when tailoring. Tailored versions are always saved as new copies. If you ask it to edit a resume directly, it saves the previous version first, so you can ask it to undo, or bring back any saved version. We keep your original plus the 9 most recent versions.
How do I disconnect it?
Open Connected apps in your Sheets Resume account, find Claude or ChatGPT and choose Disconnect. It loses access right away, and your resumes stay put. You can also remove the connector inside your assistant: in Claude, open Customize, then Connectors, pick Sheets Resume and choose Disconnect or Remove. In ChatGPT, open Settings, then Apps (or Plugins), pick Sheets Resume and choose Disconnect. Access also ends on its own if the connection goes unused for 90 days.
