What resume format is best?
The best resume format is a clean, single-column, black-and-white document that guides a recruiter's eye to your most important information in ten seconds or less.

The goal of a resume is to get an interview. Nothing more nothing less.
Not to show off your design taste. Not to "stand out" visually. Not to express your personality through tasteful use of teal. To get someone to want to talk to you.
Now think about the creature on the other end: usually young, caffeinated out of their minds, with a thousand resumes to burn through before end of day. They're not reading your resume. No no no. They're skimming for positive signal that they should chat with you, and scanning for negative signal that they shouldn't. You have ten seconds. Maybe twenty if they're feeling generous.
Given that reality, what's the optimal resume format? One that delivers maximum signal, minimum friction. Single column. Clean font. Consistent formatting. No colors, no sidebars, no icons next to your skills section.
Why do people choose "creative" formats anyway?
Because they don't properly understand their audience. And because resume builder websites offer them, and offering choices makes you feel like you're getting a personalized product. It's marketing, not advice. When you pick the layout that "speaks to you," you feel more invested and more comfortable paying. What those websites don't tell you is that there will be differences in interview rates between formats. Picking the prettier one might cost you interviews. That's not a trade worth making. Clarity and substance is what matters.
What about ATS systems?
They suck. And also aren't the true gatekeeper. That said, single-column, simple formatting is also your safest bet for getting parsed correctly by applicant tracking systems. Multi-column layouts and tables frequently confuse shitty ATS parsers, causing your experience to be read out of order or dropped entirely. A resume no human ever sees because the ATS absolutely mangled it isn't helpful either.
